Sustainability, ethical husbandry and free range. More and more people are concerned about where their meat comes from and how the animals are treated before they enter their next phase in the circle of life. Farm holidays, where city folks learn about agriculture and livestock, are booming. But not everybody has the time or the budget to take such an educational vacation. Still there is an easy way to contribute to your future Hamburger´s happy life: Just like dogs, cows love to play! So next time you pass a cattle ranch in Harmony or Grapeseed, take some time, and play a round of cow tipping. There are only a few rules to follow.
Be respectful
Cows are very sensitive animals. For a safe and fun playtime it is important to understand their body language.
You may approach: A relaxed cow leaves its tail hanging down. Having the right ear back and left ear forward shows a positive state of being. (The left side of the brain is associated with positive emotions and the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body.)
Stay away: If the tail is tucked between the legs, the cow is sick or cold or frightened. An arched back and head and ears lowered are a sign of discomfort or discontentment.
Consent
Just because a cow is feeling peachy, that doesn´t mean it is in the mood to play. To show that you are not a threat and are coming in peace, approach the cow sideways to decrease your size and walk towards it diagonally instead of full frontal. As a treat you could offer a head of lettuce. If the cow does not run away, pet it, or scratch it behind the ears. To know if the cow is up for a game of cow tipping do the following: Place both of your hands on the cow´s shoulder blades and give it a very gentle push. If the cow stays with you or even licks your hands, it is ready and consenting.
Execution
Cows are very heavy animals and can weigh up to 1,200 pounds. For the safe execution of the tipping game, only play it with two humans versus one cow. One human player places their hands on the cow´s shoulder blades, the other human places their hands on the rear flank. Now the battle of human strength versus the cow´s counterpressure can begin!
After one minute the challenge is over. Don´t forget your sportsmanship if the result should be “last cow standing” and show your appreciation with a good butt scratch or another head of lettuce. Game on!
