Collectibles: Fun or Fund?

Updated: Aug 17

If you’ve been in San Andreas long enough, you probably know that the collectible market in this city is nothing to sneeze at. Some of the rarest and most sought-after items, such as the neon dream saya, exclusive (and secret) Public Works plushies, and unopened boxes of old but popular collectibles can go for as much as a cheap house or lower-end super car. Most local businesses have a mascot plushie or promotional collectibles of some kind, and for good reason!! A couple of my personal favourites include the Public Works Froges, Shroomies, and Rat, “Squishy” loaf cat from Toe Beans, Bando Duck, Lord Chonk and Madam Mittens from Plush N’ Rush, and Carnage Noir crow from Carnage Cars.

The Neon Dream, Yin/Yang, and Blood On Wood Saya, some of the rarest and most sought after collectibles. Not to mention the turtle plushie on my head!!

Some of you may be obsessed with collectibles and see no issue with emptying your bank account to buy a plushie or rare item you absolutely have to have. Others have no interest in collecting themselves, but understand the value of certain items and purchase collectibles as a future investment. Sceptics believe that the current state of the market for collectibles is ridiculous, but I believe that if you’ve worked hard for your money, you’re free to spend it however you like on whatever brings you joy, and some of those things tend to come with a big price tag.

Full transparency, I myself am an avid collector and happen to run Calhoun Pawn, the most active and well-known pawn shop in the city, so I’m definitely biased on this matter. Collectibles have been a significant part of my life since I moved here, both personally and business-wise. My current collection of over 300+ unique items started out from my very first loaf cat that I was given as a gift, and my pawn shop was originally a side gig selling my extra collectibles to raise money for an official business.

The Toy Hut at Public Works HQ, back when the Froges, Nessie, and Sharks were available for purchase.

But that also means that I’ve had a lot more experiences than most in this field, including seeing customers’ elated reactions upon finally being able to get that one collectible they’ve wanted for so long, for themselves or as a gift. And half the time, someone comes in with a bunch of collectibles to sell that they no longer want or would like to get money for, and those customers are equally happy having made money that they can invest into something else that brings them joy.

Understanding both sides of the coin leads me to the conclusion that whether you’re into collectibles as a collector, investment, or casual hobby, there is always something for someone and joy to be found from these cool little items created and designed by people with unique ideas and perspectives. Between plushies, toys, game sets, keychains, lighters, saya, skateboards, figurines, charms, jewellery, ornaments, umbrellas, and so much more, this city has so much to offer if you know where to look. So if you haven’t already, grab a ride and visit our local businesses to see what specialty items they have to offer whenever you get the chance!!

Our very own Mak Calhoun’s very cool plushie collection.
